Singer Laren in association with
the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) is putting J.F.S. Esser’s
original collection back on the map. Esser amassed an impressive collection
of works of art by such artists as George Breitner, Leo Gestel, Piet van der
Hem, Isaac Israels, Piet Mondrian, Jan Sluijters and Willem Witsen. The
collection is unique in that it gives us a picture of an important period of
Dutch painting: the rise of Amsterdam impressionism and Dutch luminism.
Brilliant doctor and collector
J.F.S. Esser (1877–1946) achieved
great fame as a plastic surgeon. Esser is regarded as the founder of plastic
and reconstructive surgery. In terms of art history he was a collector of
early Dutch modernist art. He had artists such as Jan Sluijters and G.H.
Breitner as patients and this is why he was an early collector of their work.
He supported them both financially and morally. Initially Esser collected the
Hague School and Amsterdam impressionism, with a particular focus on the work
of Breitner. From around 1907 it was the luminist art of young artists like
Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, Piet Mondrian and Piet van der Hem, described at
the time as ‘ultra modern’, which attracted his attention. Esser collected
works by the luminists, whose work at that time was regularly rejected for exhibitions
and slated by the press. He not only supported them, he also saw to it that
they achieved recognition. He is considered to be the first serious collector
of Mondrian, but when his work became more abstract Esser stopped collecting
it.
In the period from 1906 to
1912 Esser put together an impressive collection estimated at more than eight
hundred works. He had a preference for sketches and, in addition to
paintings, collected a great number of sketches, drawings and watercolours.
The collection provides a representative illustration of Dutch painting and
drawing from the early years of the 20th century and contains works by, among
others, Isaac Israels, Willem Witsen, Hendrik Weegewijs and Piet Wiegman, as
well as the artists discussed above.
Reconstruction of the collection
At the beginning of the 20th
century there were a number of prominent private collectors of contemporary
art. They collected works of art straight after they were made and in this
way contributed to the recognition, reputation and spread of modern art in
the Netherlands. In some cases art historical research has led to a
reconstruction of private collections like this, such as the Piet
Boendermaker and P. A. Regnault collections. The importance of the J. F. S.
Esser collection justifies the initiative of the RKD and Singer Laren in
bringing the Esser collection back into the spotlight by compiling as
complete a reconstruction as possible of this prominent private collection.

Singer Laren
maakt een documentaire over het fascinerende leven van Johannes Esser, die
tijdens de tentoonstelling te zien is in Singer
Laren en door de AVRO wordt uitgezonden. Uitzending AVRO op 11 december om

Johannes Esser (1877-1946) kocht niet alleen al heel vroeg moderne
kunst die toen nog niemand mooi vond, zoals Piet Mondriaan en Jan Sluijters, hij leidde daarnaast een bizar leven als
plastisch chirurg én Nederlands kampioen schaken.
Als kunstverzamelaar was Esser uniek; hij was de
eerste verzamelaar van Piet Mondriaan en kocht schilderijen van Jan Sluijters, Leo Gestel, Piet van der Hem en andere
modernen, in een tijd dat de meeste mensen het te wild en schreeuwerig
vonden, heel anders dan de bruine, tonige
voorstellingen van Israëls en Breitner die men gewend was. Esser
was daarnaast een van de allereerste plastisch chirurgen die baanbrekende
operaties verrichtte. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog streefde hij naar een
Chirurgische Vrijstaat, een onafhankelijk land waar oorlogsverminkten konden
worden genezen en revalideren. Daarbij zag hij ook nog kans in 1913 het Nederlands kampioenschap schaken te winnen.
Johannes Esser was een unieke figuur met een leven vol passie en
idealen, die uiteindelijk roemloos overleed in een
slooppand in Chicago. Voor het eerst worden zijn persoon, zijn leven en
collectie belicht.
